Brightlingsea 7-5 Colchester
Brightlingsea returned to league action after the Christmas break as they made the short journey over to Greenstead Social Club to face Colchester
Colchester raced into a 2 nil lead in the pairs, first up, Adam Howard & Mick Cain defeated Brightlingsea’s Tony Osborne & Bryan Margerison in 39 darts before Kevin Edwards & Alan Collins lost out to Colchester’s Darron Britton & Stuart Hunt in 38 darts. Brightlingsea needed to dig in, and the two pairs duly responded. Joe Twinn & Colin Lloyd got Brightlingsea’s first point on the board with a win over Eddie Gosling & Michael Stevens in 38 darts, with Colin averaging 35.89 including a maximum. Then, in the last pair set, Rab Scott & Gavin Payne beat Steve Gentry & Dominic Ryan to level the match in 32 darts, with a combined average of 31.28.
Into the singles and first up for Brightlingsea was Colin Lloyd who put his side in the lead for the first time, he see off the challenge of Steve Gentry with a 3-0 win, with legs of 22, 19 & 16 and an average of 26.37. Joe Twinn next up made it 4-2 on the night, with another 3-0 victory over Colchester’s Ricky Paterson with legs of 24, 18 & 23. In the next set Colchester reduced the lead to one with Mick Cain putting in an impressive performance against Rab Scott to win 3-0 and a 28.36 average, Mick’s highest of the season with winning legs of 22, 14 & 17. In the 4th singles set, Brightlingsea restored the lead to two as Bryan Margerison delivered a namesake magic performance as he beat Dominic Ryan 3-0 with winning legs of 18, 20 & 18 to average 26.84. Stuart Hunt for Colchester made it 5-4 overall as he beat Brightlingsea’s Alan Collins in a last leg decider. Alan won the 1st leg in 18 darts, Stuart levelled in 19 darts, then a miscount from Alan allowed Stuart to win the third in 19 darts, Alan then levelled in 20 darts before Stuart won the decider in 26 darts. The next set went Brightlingsea’s way as Kevin Edwards took the man of the match award with a superb performance averaging 29.86 against Eddie Gosling. Eddie won the first leg in 21 darts, then Kev took over and won in 17, 17 & 14 darts! Colchester closed the gap once again as young Adam Howard managed to beat Brightlingsea’s Gavin Payne in another last leg decider. Gavin won the first leg in 20 darts, Adam responded in 21 darts and a 118 checkout. Adam won the next in 22 darts before Gavin levelled in 21 darts, and in the last leg the youngster held his nerve to win in 18 darts. In the last set, it was all to play for at 6-5. Brightlingsea’s Tony Osborne took on Darron Britton. Darron won the opening leg, then Tony responded with a 120 checkout, Darron then found a 14 dart leg before Tony levelled 2-2, and in the final leg, Tony found an 84 finish to give Brightlingsea the points 7-5.
A hard fought battle between the two sides as Brightlingsea took home the bonus points. Results elsewhere helped Brightlingsea close the gap on the league leaders Southend. Next week Brightlingsea host Brightlingsea Regent in the town derby at the football club, North Road.
