Clacton 5-7 Brightlingsea
Brightlingsea made the trip over to Clacton for the Tendring Derby, having won the home match 7-5 Brightlingsea were over joyed with the same result on the night. Colin Lloyd was absent this week so Brightlingsea brought in George Lord for his first match of the season.
The Pairs was a terrific high standard throughout, First up for Brightlingsea was Joe Twinn & Sam Lepley, but they were unable to prevent defeat as they lost out to Keith Wright and Andrew Currivan in 46 darts. Brightlingsea levelled in the next set, Alan Collins & Kevin Edwards were superb in their victory beating Curtis Hammond & Jason Evans in just 29 darts, and the first of three 24.52 combined averages! Clacton’s Wayne Bloomfield & Adrian Genery then returned the same average as they beat George Lord & Gavin Payne. Finally, Brightlingsea squared the match at 2-2 as Tony Osborne & Bryan Margerison beat Keith Farthing & Nic Groves in again 29 darts with Bryan averaging 39.57 on his own!
The singles started with a draw that looked very close on paper and pretty even, first up was Kevin Edwards who looked to keep his fine form going as he participates in the PDC UK Open this weekend. He beat Andrew Currivan in a last leg decider with both players averaging over 27. Andrew won the first leg in 18 darts, Kevin responded with an excellent 11 dart leg including a 180. then nicked the third in 23 darts before Andrew levelled with a 16 dart leg, and in the final leg Kevin found a 17 dart leg to win the set. Next up Tony Osborne beat Nic Groves 3-1 with winning legs of 20, 17 & 24 darts to make it 4-2 on the night to Brightlingsea. Third on saw Gavin Payne make it 5-2 to Brightlingsea as he beat Adrian Genery in another last leg decider, Gavin won the 1st leg in 17 darts then Adrian won the next two in both 24 darts, Gavin then levelled in 24 darts before winning the set in 20 darts. George Lord stepped up next for the first time this season, but he was unable to prevent defeat as he went down 3-1 to Suffolk based Jason Evans. Jason won in 22, 22 & 21 darts. The scoreline was brought to within one as Joe Twinn lost out to former Suffolk County player Keith Wright who took his chances to win 3-1 with legs of 22, 29 & 18. At 5-4 things were tight going into the last 3 sets, up next, Alan Collins put in a professional performance as he beat former PDC Tour Card holder Curtis Hammond 3-1, Alan’s winning legs were 20, 18 & 18, if it wasn’t for a few missed doubles it could have been a high average, nonetheless he come out with a 24.12 average. The two set lead was reduced to one again in the penultimate set, Sam Lepley was unable to prevent defeat as Keith Farthing put in a man of the match performance with legs of 19. 18 & 17 to average 27.64. So all down to the last, and it was left to Bryan Margerison to get Brightlingsea over the line and claim the 7-5 victory, as he see of the challenge of Wayne Bloomfield. Bryan won the first leg in 16 darts with Wayne, The Essex County A man, responding with a 16 dart leg, Bryan then brought home the victory in 22 & 23 darts to win 3-1.
A good double for Brightlingsea over their Tendring counterparts, next week Brightlingsea travel to second placed Springfield which will no doubt be a good match, with both side looking to close the gap on leaders Southend. Still all to play for with 5 matches to go.
