Darren Lusher Memorial Competition Week 2

Brightlingsea hosted week two at Brightlingsea Regent Football Club, North Road.

Brightlingsea were first up this week against Colchester. Brightlingsea again came out 4-0 winners. First up Tony Osborne & Rab Scott beat Darron Britton & Stuart Hunt 3-2 despite being 2-0 down. The second set saw Alan Collins & Kevin Edwards beat Adam Howard & Ricky Paterson 3-0. Joe Twinn & Sam Lepley came out 3-2 victors over Eddie Gosling & Mick Cain and the forth set saw another 3-2 win for Bryan Margerison & Gavin Payne over Steve Gentry & Dominic Ryan.

Brightlingsea faced Brightlingsea Regent next which saw the 4-0 run come to an end as this time the game was won 3-1, in the first set Joe Twinn & Sam Lepley beat Lee Woods & Colin Adey 3-2, in the second Tony Osborne & Rab Scott beat Kevin Savory & Grahame Crump 3-2. The third set Bryan Margerison and Gavin Payne lost to Anthony Neal & Mark Henry and in the final set Alan Collins & Kevin Edwards beat Steve Cook & Paul Kempen 3-0. Brightlingsea dropped their first set and take 4 points.

The match between Colchester and Brightlingsea Regent finished in a 2-2 draw.

Darren Lusher Memorial Competition Week 1

Brightlingsea started their Darren Lusher Campaign with a short trip to the Brightlingsea Community Centre to face Brightlingsea Regent and Colchester. In the first of a three week Round Robin format.

Brightlingsea were first up against Brightlingsea Regent in a format of 4 pairs matches best of 5 legs. Brightlingsea came out 4-0 winners, in the first set Joe Twinn & Sam Lepley beat Lee Woods & Colin Adey 3-1, in the second set Alan Collins & Kevin Edwards see off Anthony Neal & Mark Henry 3-1, in the third, Gavin Payne & Rab Scott ran out 3-2 winners over Stuart Elmer & Paul Kempen and the last set saw Bryan Margerison & Tony Osborne beat Kevin Savory & Grahame Crump 3-0. This gave Brightlingsea a maximum 5 points from the first match.

In the second match, Brightlingsea then faced Colchester, and although a lot more of a tighter match, Brightlingsea eventually came out 4-0 winners again taking the maximum 5 points to add to the league table. First up Alan Collins & Kevin Edwards beat Eddie Gosling & Mick Cain 3-1, in the second, Joe Twinn & Sam Lepley beat Darron Britton & Stuart Hunt in a decider 3-2, Third on Bryan Margerison & Tony Osborne beat Adam Howard & Michael Stevens 3-2 despite being 2-0 down. The fourth set saw Gavin Payne & Rab Scott also win 3-2 over Steve Gentry & Dominic Ryan.

The third match saw Colchester take a maximum 5 points from Brightlingsea Regent with a 4-0 set win.

Brentwood 4-8 Brightlingsea

Brightlingsea travelled down to South Essex to Brentwood, a place where Brightlingsea have a very good record at winning their previous two match 8-4, ironic that that was to be the same scoreline on this occasion too. with Brightlingsea buoyant to bounce back after last weeks draw at home to Tilbury, Alan Collins returned from Barbados, with Rab Scott missing for a Birthday holiday trip to Rome.

Brightlingsea got off to the worst possible start in the pairs, going 2 behind. First up the pairing of Joe Twinn and Sam Lepley were unable to prevent defeat to Steve Johnson and Tommy Wilson, despite a combined average of 28.03, the host won the set in 33 darts with Steve Johnson taking out 127 to clasp victory. Next up Bryan Margerison and Gavin Payne lost out to Dave Ball and Rob Donat in 39 darts. Brightlingsea got one back with the experienced duo of Kevin Edwards and Colin Lloyd winning in 36 darts over Robbie Smith and Ben Maguire. Brightlingsea then lost the last pairs set with Tony Osborne and Alan Collins losing to Steve Woodside and Mark Banham in 36 darts, despite Alan averaging 31.73.

The pairs complete and Brentwood deserving leading 3-1, it was left to the singles for Brightlingsea to get the result, first up was Alan Collins, he got Brightlingsea off and running with a 3-0 win over Ben Maguire, winning in 19, 24 & 24 darts. Brightlingsea then pulled the match back level as Sam Lepley beat Mark Banham in 5 legs. Sam went 2-0 down, but he improved and held his nerve to win 3-2 with legs of 21, 24 & 19 including a 180 to win. Kevin Edwards followed with a win to give Brightlingsea the lead, he see off the challenge of Rob Donat to win 3-1 with winning legs of 15, 16 & 21 to average 26.90. In the eighth set, the two teams were level once more as Gavin Payne lost to former England International Steve Johnson 3-1, Gavin took the first in 16 including a 180 but missed doubles allowed Steve to win the next three legs in 16, 27 & 17 darts. Brightlingsea then got hold of the match and reeled off the next four sets, in the 9th Tony Osborne beat Robbie Smith 3-0 with legs of 23, 20 & 19 to average 24.24 with Robbie hitting two 180’s in his defeat. Next up Joe Twinn blew his opponent Steve Woodside away 3-0 to average 29.47, with winning legs of 16, 14 and 21 darts. The 11th set saw game of the night, former Pro Colin Lloyd showed real class to beat his opponent Tommy Wilson to claim Man of the Match with a sublime average on 30.72. The game was hard fault and it was Tommy who won the first leg in 15 darts hitting a 180 before shooting out 110, Colin levelled in 18 darts including a 180. Colin started the third leg with another maximum but it was Tommy who won it in 15 darts to lead 2-1, Colin hit back with a 16 dart leg and in the last leg Tommy hit two big scores to leave 90 after 12 darts, but Colin never let Tommy in and shot out with 161 to win a magnificent set! Tommy came away with a 29.79 average and was very unfortunate not to take victory. The last set, Bryan Margerison sealed the 8-4 victory with a 3-1 win over Dave Ball, with winning legs of 18, 22 & 17 darts to average 26.72.

Brightlingsea now have a rest from league action as next Wednesday its the Rose Bowl competition and then the  following weeks see us face Brightlingsea Regent & Colchester in the Darren Lusher Cup, then on the 21st December Brightlingsea are at Home to Clacton in the Tendring Derby before Christmas. But before all that commences we cheer on Kevin Edwards who travels to the Lakeside in a bid to Qualify for the big one after Christmas, The World Darts Championship this coming Wednesday. Brightlingsea 6-6 Tilbury

Brightlingsea welcomed Tilbury on a cold Wednesday night, with no Alan Collins due to the Barbados festival of Darts, Colin Lloyd came back into the team.

Tilbury got off to a flyer in the first pairs set, with Brightlingsea’s pairing of Bryan Margerison and Gavin Payne ruing missed doubles as they lost to Essex County Youth youngsters Chris Gower and Liam Hill. Brightlingsea responded and won the next three sets, firstly Kevin Edwards and Colin Lloyd won in 34 darts beating Richie Howson and Roy Crabb, Kevin hit a 180 on his first throw and came out of the pairs with an impressive 34.17 individual average. Next up Joe Twinn and Sam Lepley see off Keith Petrie and Cliff Reynolds in 38 darts. The last pairing of Tony Osborne and Rab Scott beat their opponents Danny Brown and Mathew Barnard in 39 darts to make it 3-1 to Brightlingsea after the pairs.

On to the singles and first up for Brightlingsea was Joe Twinn, he was unable to prevent defeat as he lost to Danny Brown 3-1, with Danny winning in 23, 22 & 23 darts. Tony Osborne made it 4-2 up next as he beat Keith Petrie 3-1 in 22, 17 & 17 darts averaging 25.92. Tilbury then won the next two sets to level the match. First Sam Lepley lost 3-2 to Cliff Reynolds, and then Gavin Payne lost 3-1 to Liam Hill. Colin Lloyd restored the lead for Brightlingsea with a man of the match performance winning 3-2 against Chris Gower, with Colin winning in 19, 16 & 18 darts to average 26.82 including a 180 as well. Tilbury were then level after the 10th set as Rab Scott lost 3-0 to Mathew Barnard. Bryan Margerison made it 6-5 to Brightlingsea as he beat Roy Crabb 3-1 in winning legs of 17, 24 & 18 darts to average 25.27. The night was ended all square as Tilbury won the last set in a cracking match between Kevin Edwards and Richie Howson. Richie, former PDC pro, won the first leg in 17 darts, Kevin responded and won the next two in 16 and 11 darts, Richie then pulled it back with a 13 darter and in the last leg Richie won in 16 darts with Kevin missing 32 to win himself. Richie finished with an average of 29.51 and Kevin 29.23.

A fair result on the night but a result Brightlingsea certainly didn’t want allowing Southend to pull clear at the top. Next up for Brightlingsea is a trip to Brentwood where they will defiantly need to get back to winning ways as far as a title challenge is concerned.

Kelvedon 2-10 Brightlingsea

Brightlingsea returned to league action after last week’s break for doubles with a trip down the A12 to Kelvedon. Kelvedon had been placed 5th in the table prior to tonight’s game and were unbeaten at home this season.

Brightlingsea got off to another dream start in the pairs, racing into a 4 set lead. First up was the pairing of Bryan Margerison and Gavin Payne, they struggled to get over line with missed doubles but eventually got there and see off Danny McIntyre and Clay Westwood. Second up Tony Osborne and Rab Scott beat Lee Howe and Roy Laybourn in 37 darts with a combined average of 27.05. Brightlingsea made it three as Joe Twinn & Sam Lepley see off the Kelvedon pairing of Steve Laybourn and Steve Jones. Brightlingsea then completed the pairs rout as Kevin Edwards and Alan Collins beat Dave Gwilliams and Steve Turner in 41 darts.

Brightlingsea continued to dominate in the singles, first up Kevin Edwards beat Lee Howe. Kevin never had it all his own way as the set rightly went in to a last leg decider, Kev won the 1st leg in 22 darts including a 180, with Lee replying in 20 darts, Kev then held his throw again going out on 108 in 15 darts. Lee again replied with a 15 dart leg and shooting out on 156. Kevin managed to come through in the last leg in 22 darts. Alan Collins next up made it 6-0 after seeing off Steve Jones 3-0 in 23, 25 & 23 darts. Kelvedon got their first point on the board as the previously unbeaten Tony Osborne missed plenty of doubles and lost to Steve Laybourn. Tony surged into a 2-0 lead in 18 and 20 darts, shooting out on 112 in the second leg, but missed doubles allowed Steve to level to 2-2 and in the last leg Steve punished Tony for the misses and won in 26 darts. Sam Lepley made it 7-1 as he beat Danny McIntyre 3-0 in legs of 21, 24 and 18 darts, including a 111 finish in the 3rd. Joe Twinn followed up with another 3-0 win, he beat Clay Westwood 3-0 in 24, 21 & 16 darts to average 24.64. Gavin Payne next up took the man of the match with a 3-1 win over Dave Gwilliams. Gavin lost the first leg with Dave winning in 24 darts, then Gavin got going and won the next three in 22, 16 & 15 darts, with Gavin finishing 280 in 6 darts in the last leg hitting a maximum 174 and taking out 106 to average 25.28. In the penultimate set, Kelvedon got their second and final point of the match as Brightlingsea’s Rab Scott lost 3-0 to Roy Laybourn, with Roy winning in 23, 20 & 16 darts to average 25.47. Last on, Bryan Margerison see off his opponent Steve Turner 3-0 in 19, 21 & 27 darts.

Brightlingsea now go joint top of the Essex Superleague, level on points with holders Southend. Next week they face Tilbury at home, with Alan Collins absent due to attending the Barbados Darts Festival, Colin Lloyd will come back to take his place. There may also be another surprise Essex return also…

Brightlingsea 9-3 Springfield

Brightlingsea returned to league action welcoming Springfield. It would be the first league game back since the very sad passing of Julie Vickers a little over a week ago. Springfield had one or two key players missing but nobody could take any credit away from Brightlingsea who deserved the win with an exceptional team performance.

Brightlingsea got out of the blocks and rushed into a 4-0 lead after the pairs. The first pairing of Joe Twinn and Sam Lepley see off Craig Vickers and Robbie Turner in an edgy opener, Brightlingsea then extended their lead with Alan Collins and Kevin Edwards winning over James Allison and Michael Wiles, in an exceptional 28 darts, with a combined average of 35.75! The highest combined average in the league so far. The third pairing saw Tony Osborne and Rab Scott see off Charlie Selby and Don Vickers in 41 darts. The last pair of Bryan Margerison and Gavin Payne beat the father and son pairing of Darren and Jamie Peetoom.

Brightlingsea kept going in the singles, first up Sam Lepley overcome a tricky opponent in Don Vickers, winning 3-1. The next set saw Springfield get their first point on the board with Alan Collins losing out to Essex Captain Darren Peetoom, with Darren hitting two 180’s and winning in legs of 24, 17 and 13. Alan did shoot out on 158 in the second leg but doubles let him down as he lost 3-1. Springfield made it 5-2, as Rab Scott lost to James Allison 3-0 in legs of 24, 24 & 21 darts. The 8th set saw Brightlingsea clinch the draw as Gavin Payne beat Jamie Peetoom in 5 legs, in a game that was fairly scrappy, Gav won in 26, 26 & 19 darts. Kevin Edwards next up threw in a man of the match performance with a superb 3-1 win over Michael Wiles. Kevin won in 15, 18 & 14 darts to average 31.71. At 7-2, Bryan Margerison next up beat Springfield youngster Charlie Selby in a set that could have gone either way with Bryan stealing the deciding leg to get his point on the board. In the penultimate game of the night we saw a clash of Essex county players Tony Osborne and Craig Vickers, Tony eventually coming out a 3-1 winner, with winning legs of 25, 24 & 17. The last game was probably game of the night between another two Essex County players Joe Twinn and Robbie Turner. Robbie rushed into a 2 nil lead, taking out 107 in the second leg, but Joe pulled it back to level in 17 and 18 darts including a 174 maximum. The final leg with against the darts saw Robbie win in 21 darts to complete the final score of 9-3.

A superb win for Brightlingsea, their first ever over former Champions Springfield. Now Brightlingsea find themselves just 1 point behind leaders Southend. Next week there is no scheduled fixture as it is the league pairs at Chelmsford Social Club.

Cressing 2-10 Brightlingsea

Brightlingsea returned to league action this week heading to Cressing, a week after success in the Superleague Fours Competition. Brightlingsea were boosted by the signing of former PDC world number one and multiple major competition winner Colin Lloyd, who played his first league game after coming back from illness.

Brightlingsea again got off to a flyer in the pairs, over a side that finished 4th in the table last campaign, first up the pairing to Bryan Margerison and Gavin Payne won in 41 darts over Robbie Caton and John Abbott. Brightlingsea then went two up with the pairing of Tony Osborne and Colin Lloyd seeing of Stuart Mortimer and Jamie Palmer. Next up, the young pairing of Joe Twinn and Sam Lepley blew their opponents away in 32 darts, with Joe averaging 37.59 and a combined average of 31.28, beating Rhys Hayden and Stuart Thorogood. Cressing picked up the last pairs point as Kevin Edwards and Alan Collins lost out Tim Franklin and Mike Hancocks, despite Alan averaging individually 34.17.

With the score line at 3-1 to Brightlingsea after the pairs, they managed to keep their foothold on the match as Joe Twinn kicked off with a 3-0 win over Stuart Thorogood, Joe win in 17, 17 & 22 darts to average 26.84. Second up, Bryan Margerison made it 5-1 on the night as he replicated Joe with a 3-0 win over Sam Hayden, with Bryan winning in 24, 21 & 20 darts. The third singles fell to Tony Osborne who continued his 100% start to the season, this week beating Tim Franklin 3-0 in 19, 23 & 19 darts. Brightlingsea then got to seven when Kevin Edwards managed to beat John Abbott coming out the right side of a last leg decider despite an injured hand, Kevin won in 24, 15 & 25 and hit a 180 in the last leg to give him the edge in the set. John Abbott took out 111 in the first leg. Next up was new comer Colin Lloyd who managed to kick off his Superleague return with a 3-2 win over Jamie Palmer, Jamie won the opening leg in 17, Colin hit back with a 12 darter and 121 finish, Colin then lead winning in 24 darts, but Jamie levelled in 18 darts, then Colin edged the decider finishing with a 25.54 average. Cressing won the next set and got their second point of the night, as young star Rhys Hayden beat Brightlingsea’s Alan Collins 3-1, with Rhys hitting two 180’s, winning in 18, 19 & 23 darts. Brightlingsea then reeled off the next two sets to complete the scoring, firstly Sam Lepley see off Mike Hancocks 3-0 in 17, 21 & 25 darts including a 123 finish in the second leg. Lastly Gavin Payne threw in a quality set to take the man of the match as he beat Robbie Caton 3-0. Gavin won in 21, 20 and 14 darts averaging 27.33, his highest of the season so far.

A superb result for Brightlingsea saw them go second in the league now just 1 point between themselves and Southend at the top of the table. Next week Brightlingsea host Tendring neighbours Clacton at Brightlingsea Regent Football Club.

Brightlingsea Win Fours!

Brightlingsea sent out two sets of fours for the inaugural competition held at Chelmsford Social Club on Wednesday Night.

Brightlingsea welcomed out Colin Lloyd, the former PDC World Number 1 made his first appearance in a Brightlingsea shirt after previously missing the start to the season with illness.

The two Fours were:

A: Alan Collins, Kevin Edwards, Bryan Margerison & Wayne Bloomfield

B: Tony Osborne, Colin Lloyd, Sam Lepley & Rab Scott

With both sides handed a bye in the first round, the ‘A’ team faced four players from Basildon Q-Ball, despite playing well the ‘A’ team crashed out with the Q-Ball side having a purple patch and winning 2-0.

The ‘B’ team faced Maldon ‘B’ in the 2nd Round, despite some very average scoring came out 2-0 winners.

Next up was the reigning and defending Fours Winners Southend ‘A’, which consisted of Dan Day, Barry Lynn, Paul Marsh & Paul Barham, 4 of the best players in the county! but the ‘B’ were excellent winning 2-0 and power scoring their way through, with Colin hitting a perfect double percentage 2 from 2 to win.

Next up in the Semi Final was Basildon Q-Ball, the four that had previously defeated the ‘A’ Team. The ‘B’ again showed some great scoring and finishing and also won this one 2-0 without giving Q-Ball a sniff.

The final saw Brightlingsea ‘B’ face Laindon Winston from the B Division, who were captained by Essex County regular Shaun Walsh, but the B side played well again to win 2-0 and win the trophy without dropping a leg of darts.

Brightlingsea 10-2 Chelmsford

Brightlingsea welcomed newly promoted B Division Champions to North Road for their latest Superleague clash.

The Pairs started well for Brightlingsea as the first paring of Alan Collins and Kevin Edwards beat Des Vickers and Harry Smith in 38 darts. Brightlingsea then went 2-0 up with the young paring of Joe Twinn and Sam Lepley beating Matt Garrett and Mel Silvester in 35 darts, with Sam averaging an impressive 31.59 individually. Chelmsford pulled one back when Tony Osborne and Rab Scott lost to Andy Kateley and Senan Corry in 35 darts with Andy hitting a 180 in the first throw of the set. Brightlingsea then completed the pairs as 3-1 victors with Bryan Margerison and Gavin Payne blowing away their opponents Mark Chapman and Jason Vickers in 31 darts, with Bryan averaging 37.63 and a combined average of 32.29, the joint 2nd highest pairs average in the league to date.

On to the pairs and Brightlingsea continued their stronghold on the match as was first up and he secured a 3-1 victory over Des Vickers. Despite Gavin going one behind, he won the next three legs in 23, 24 & 16 darts top secure victory. Next up was Tony Osborne who was steady winning 3-0 over Mel Silvester averaging 27.33 and shooting out with two 100+ finishes, 106 in the 2nd leg and 130 in the 3rd with two 15 dart legs. Chelmsford pulled one back in the 3rd singles as Essex County Newbie Matt Garrett showed his class as he beat Brightlingsea’s Bryan Margerison 3-0 with legs of 16, 19 & 24 averaging 25.47. At 5-2 next on was Rab Scott, who won in 5 legs over Jason Vickers, it was a scrappy affair but Rab just edged it in the last leg. Brightlingsea got to the magnificent 7 sealing the win with Sam Lepley showing his class beating Mark Chapman 3-0 with winning legs of 20, 20 & 14 averaging 27.83. 6th singles fell to Kevin Edwards to make it 8-2 as he put in a Man of the match performance in an exception 3-0 victory over Senan Corry, with legs of 16, 19 & 16 he averaged 29.47 starting the 3rd leg with a 180 also. Brightlingsea won the last two matches completing the 10-2 drought, Joe Twinn won in 5 legs as he beat Harry Smith 3-2, with winning legs of 26, 18 & 21 darts. The last set was a match between two Essex County Heavyweights with 194 caps between them, Alan Collins and Andy Kateley. With Alan winning a last leg decider, Alan won with legs of 14, 18 & 21 to average 26.46 despite Andy hitting 11 ton plus scores and averaging higher with 28.41 and cracking set to watch.

Brightlingsea showed why they are strong titles contenders this season by winning very convincingly this week. Next week we have a rest from matches as it’s the inaugural Superleague Fours and Brightlingsea may just have a new signing coming out… watch this space 😉

Rayleigh Rascals 5-7 Brightlingsea

Brightlingsea climbed aboard the bus to Rayleigh looking to bounce back from the previous weeks defeat to Southend.

Brightlingsea found themselves one nil down after the first pairing as Rab Scott, who replaced Darren O’Neill from the previous week, and Gavin Payne lost out to Essex County duo Lennie Holmes & Mick Peel. Brightlingsea soon levelled it up with Joe Twinn & Sam Lepley beating Nick Benson & Gary Barber in 38 darts, with Sam averaging an impressive 32.83 individual average. Brightlingsea then went ahead, the consistent pairing of Alan Collins & Kevin Edwards beat Stephen Kiamil & Aaron Searle. The Rascals levelled up in the last pair as Ben Adams & Phil Daldry beat Tony Osborne & Bryan Margerison in 38 darts hitting 6 ton plus scores!

2-2 after the pairs and onto the singles, Brightlingsea got off to a flyer with Tony Osborne winning 3-0 with a great average of 33.40 over Gary Barber. Tony won in 16, 14 and 15 darts hitting a 180 and shooting out on 104 in the third leg, the joint highest average in the league so far. The Rascals then levelled to 3-3, Stephen Kiamil hit a Man of the match average beating Rab Scott 3-0 in 15, 18 and 18 darts averaging 29.47. Rascals went in front again in this tight battel, Mick Peel beat Sam Lepley in 4 legs in a scrappy affair. This time it was Brightlingsea’s turn to level, Bryan Margerison played excellent in his 3-2 win over Nick Benson, with winning legs of 17, 18 and 15, Bryan hit 10 ton plus scores and a 180 averaging 28.90, a hard score line on Nick as he averaged 26.31. Rascals restored the lead to 5-4 when youngster Lewis Gilson was very impressive as he beat Alan Collins 3-1, with winning legs of 14, 27 and 19, Gilson hit two 180’s ad averaged 25.44. Brightlingsea then showed some class and won the last three sets to win the match. Game of the night proceeded in the 6th set with Joe Twinn edging out Lennie Holmes in 5 legs! Joe won in 15, 18 and 14 darts and averaging 29.94! Lennie averaged 27.21, Joe hit 12 ton plus scores and both players hit a maximum in a quality contest. Kevin Edwards then beat Ben Adams 3-0 shooting out on 109 in the first leg and averaging 26.84. Last on was for the Brightlingsea win was Gavin Payne, who made no mistake in bringing home the points, he won 3-1 over Phil Daldry despite Phil hitting ten scores of 100!

Brightlingsea showed great character to get the win in a hard fault match, Rayleigh Rascals were excellent from start to finish and unlucky not to get a result. Brightlingsea’s next match will see them host newly promoted Chelmsford this coming Wednesday.
